Country Home

With this project for a country house in the Tramuntana the architect's challenge was to create an extension which would respect the original proportions of the building. The clients's wish style wise was to combine existing rustic elements with the clean lines of a contemporary interior.  The team of contractors and artisans working on the project produced some amazing features, mainly using natural materials sourced locally.

'On the ground floor the dining room, kitchen and entrance spaces were tied in by the presence of an original stone wall that was restored to blend with the concrete floors and crisp white walls.

From the dining room, a floating galvanised steel staircase was designed to access a small lounge/salon on the next floor. In the kitchen, which used to be the house's garage, the beans were painted white to increase the sensation of height to the ceiling.

From the cosy lounge/salon one can really appreciate the beautiful volumes of the dining-room below which constitute part of the extension that provides this great height and light as well as nice square terrace for the master bedroom above the salon. In a corner of the room stands a contemporary wood burning stove, its duct providing some heat to the upstairs floor, Although the insulation has been redone and all windows are fitted with double glazing, a heating device is recommended off season. From November to March it could be quite humid if not cold in this part of the Tramuntana Valley.

On the second floor in both bedrooms the entrance to the en-suite bathrooms is signalled by the Moorish style openings, a feature designed by the architect to introduce in this old building an historical link with the North African aspect of Mallorcan culture.
