Mountain Home
The main architectural concept for this beautiful and unique house, combining local stones, corten iron portals, and wood framed windows with large glass panels; was to integrate the building within its natural surrounding, so that it would completely blend within the landscape.
The main challenge here was transforming an old and poorly build chalet into a modern home, while respecting the original volume and foot print.
Before
After
The difficulty on this site was the access and the type of ground. The land is on a slope with typical Majorcan terraces or "marges" and the ground is full of stones and rocks. Part of the reward is that all the stones used in the long front wall were cut from rocks excavated on site.
To facilitate access and for those with limited mobility a 16 meter ramp was built, running down from the parking level to the entrance of the house. The ramp is prolongated by a wooden bridge that crosses over a water feature before you enter the house.
The architects' main feature for the facade is this long stone wall stretched along the terrace that gives the illusion of a "marge" (the traditional dry stone wall). The wall comprises several corten steel portals creating openings before (as seen on image above) and after the house (as seen on image below). As the result the house is completely integrated within the rest of the terraces and the surrounding landscape.
